From Blackboards to Boardrooms: How Corporate Life Can Make You Pack on the Pounds

Oh, honey, let me tell you, transitioning from teaching in a classroom to working in the corporate world is like going from a cozy cabin in the woods to a bustling city full of temptations. And by temptations, I mean donuts, cold brew and caloric, fatty, delicious fast-food on the way to work and on your now extended lunch breaks. And if you work from home it’s right at your finger tips.

As a former teacher turned corporate baddie, I know firsthand how easy it is to fall into the trap of stress-eating while sitting at a desk all day. When I was a teacher I had no time to eat. I gained 30 lbs working from home over the past year, and had to crank up the volume to slim back down and I am about halfway back to the starting point. But fear not, my dear reader, for I have some tips and tricks to help you avoid the physical changes that can come with the territory of working in a corporate job.

First and foremost, let’s talk about the dreaded weight gain. It’s no secret that sitting at a desk all day can lead to a sedentary lifestyle, and all those office snacks can add up faster than you can say “pass the chips.” So, what can you do to combat this?

Tip #1: Get Moving!

Yes, I know, you’re thinking “but I sit at a desk all day, how can I possibly get moving?” Well, honey, there are plenty of ways to sneak some exercise into your workday. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, go for a walk during your lunch break, or even do some stretches at your desk. You don’t have to run a marathon to make a difference – every little bit counts. If you work from home get a walking desk, spin the block while on your iPad, and get up for a walk around the neighborhood.

Tip #2: Be Mindful of What You’re Eating

It’s easy to mindlessly munch on snacks throughout the day, especially when they’re readily available. But before you reach for that third cookie, ask yourself if you’re really hungry or if you’re just eating out of boredom or stress. If it’s the latter, try finding another way to cope with your emotions, such as taking a walk or doing some deep breathing exercises. And when it comes to meals, try to make healthier choices when possible. Opt for salads or grilled chicken instead of burgers and fries.

Tip #3: Pack Your Own Snacks

While it’s okay to indulge every once in a while, it’s not a good idea to make it a daily habit. So, instead of relying on the Starbucks around the corner, bring your own! Pack some fruits, veggies, or nuts to munch on throughout the day. Not only will you be making healthier choices, but you’ll also save some money in the process.

Tip #4: Invest in a Good Chair

If you’re going to be sitting for eight hours a day, you might as well be comfortable. Invest in a chair that provides good back support and allows you to adjust the height and tilt. And while you’re at it, make sure your computer monitor is at eye level to avoid straining your neck.

Tip #5: Take Breaks to Stretch

Now, let’s talk about another physical change that can come with the transition to corporate life – poor posture. When you’re standing in front of a classroom all day, you’re forced to stand up straight and engage your core. But when you’re sitting at a desk all day, it’s easy to slouch and hunch over your computer.

Sitting in one position for too long can lead to stiffness and pain. Make sure to take breaks throughout the day to stretch and move around. Stand up and do some shoulder rolls or reach for your toes. Your body will thank you for it.

The transition from teaching in a classroom to working in a corporate job can certainly come with physical changes, such as weight gain, poor posture, and sleep deprivation. But by implementing these tips and tricks, you can avoid those issues and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Remember to prioritize movement, healthy eating, good posture, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. You got this!
